SAM 13
Semi Automated Machine
|
This drill press was converted to a Tapping Machine for just one application, the tapping of 8-32 in 3/8" rod for the OSJ two piece element.
It is using a DC Gear Motor out of an old copy machine, PIC 16F84A and a Hall Effect magnetic sensor for counting the number of turns (threads). |

A hole is drilled in the end of the 3/8" rod using a small lathe.
An air operated 5C collate to hold the 3/8 inch element for tapping. |

|
A Special 8-32 tap made for tapping a non-through hole is used to put exactly 17 threads in both elements so a 1 inch set screw can attach the two halves of the element together.
